Clutter Free
in 2003
Get
yourself a large, blank sheet of paper and a thick marker. Then, make yourself
a sign that you can see every single day that says 'Clutter Free in 2003.' Hang
it in a prominent place, where you're sure to be reminded of this mantra daily.
Each
day in the new year, if even for only 5 minutes at a time, do something that
will make the 'Clutter Free in 2003' statement a true one.
Put
away something that is out of place. Donate something you never use. Weed out
your paper. Clear out your e-mail inbox. You get the picture.
By
the time the end of the year rolls around, you will have taken 365 steps to
banish the clutter!

Change: "To Change Or Not To Change ... That Is The Question" By
Randy Gilbert (c)2002
After
spending weeks developing a good habit, such as eating healthier, why do we
want to change back to your old habits?
Yet we do!?
After years of smoking and knowing cancer or emphysema are coming, we want to
quit this heartache habit?
Yet we
don't!?? And the list goes on. One of the keys to success is, "knowing
what to change and what not to change."
The
ball is in your court. The cards have been dealt. The bell has rung and clock
is ticking in the game of life. You get to choose which habits to change,
because it is your habits that will determine whether you live in happiness and
abundance or, in sorrow and poverty.
One
of today's greatest success philosophers, Jim Rohn says, "We create our
circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the
responsibility to make better choices beginning today." Whether you
realize it or not, you are constantly choosing which path to follow and scenery
changes with each one.
You
have the ability and responsibility for making proactive choices rather than
reactive ones. You can be in control of your choices rather than letting them
control you. Here are three tips that can help us know what to change and give
us some insight as to how.
Tip 1
- Gather The Right Resources
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You
don't need more time. In fact, let's be honest here. You won't get more time
even if you wanted it, because everyone gets the same amount every day.
You
don't need more answers. The world is full of people with negative opinions,
bad advice, and money grabbing schemes. Yet, how can they provide the answers
when they never take the time to find out what the questions are?
What
you need is the truth about the universe and yourself. Just like a jury in a
court of law needs "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the
truth." Without the truth you make errors in judgment that lead you down
the wrong path.
Begin
the success habit right now of asking for the truth in every situation. When
you know the truth, you will be able to stop sentencing the good habits to a
life in prison and setting the bad habits free. The truth will make itself
known if you seek it.
Tip 2
- Love Yourself First
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love
and care for yourself as a top priority. This is not selfish. Taking the time
to eat right, sleep well, learn, and exercise is the only way you will have
what it takes to care for others.
We
must first value ourselves, then we can value others. Start by forgiving
yourself for every mistake you make and use it as a learning experience. You
did the best you could considering what you knew then. You are learning, so you
will do better in the future.
Love
yourself so that you can love others. By forgiving others you are loving
yourself, because it's been scientifically proven that forgiveness brings
happiness.
Acknowledge
that others have done their best with what they knew at the time and that they
are learning more and will be better in the future.
Begin
the success habit of admitting you make mistakes, noting what you've learned
from them, and deciding to be better in the future. Use this habit to eliminate
the mistakes in your eating, sleeping, learning, and exercising habits.
Tip 3
- Get Rid Of The Clutter
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Getting
rid of the clutter in your life and learning how to concentrate your energy
will empower you to make good choices. Ralph Waldo Emerson said,
"Concentration is the secret of strength in politics, in war, in trade, in
short, in all of human affairs."
Even
though I know my major purpose in life, too much clutter often destroys my
focus. My ability to concentrate and make good choices is severely limited when
my desk, calendar, and mind are filled with extraneous things.
You
can take better control of your life by beginning the success habit of deciding
what should be on your desk and what shouldn't take up space. Decide what
should be on your calendar and what should not take up your time. Decide what
you need to remember and what things are trivia.
It
always comes down to the basics that make the difference. The basics in this
instance are the choices we make. The three success habits of seeking the
truth, loving yourself, and eliminating the clutter will help you to make the
choices for changing the rest of your habits. Choose these 3 habits today and
you will choose the good life.
4. Wild Trivia
COPING
WITH STRESS HELPS CANCER PATIENTS
Diagnosing
breast cancer is stressful and can make the disease worse, but the flip side,
researchers say, is a good coping style can aid treatment and outcome. Linda J.
Luecken of Arizona State University and Bruce E. Compas of Vanderbilt analysed
studies to show stress, mental state and coping style combine to affect
biological factors such as immune function and hormone levels, which affect
cancer progression. Active coping is taking a direct approach to dealing with a
problem and passive coping involves indirect approaches such as avoidance, withdrawal
and wishful thinking. Studies show people who adopt active coping strategies
have better immune function and lower cortisol levels, and just the opposite
for people who use passive coping strategies. "There is clear evidence
that interventions can have positive effects on emotional adjustment,
functional adjustment and treatment of disease-related symptoms (e.g. pain,
nausea, coughing)," the authors say.
The Health Benefits of Virgin Coconut OilBy
Maggie VandenBrekel
"Coconut
oil is the healthiest oil on earth" says Dr. Bruce Fife, a naturopathic
doctor and the author of "The Healing Miracles of Coconut Oil."
Modern
research backs up this bold statement. Once wrongly accused of increasing
cholesterol levels, coconut oil is now actually being used by doctors in the
treatment of a variety of disorders. Clinical studies have shown that coconut
oil has anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, and is now even being used in
treating AIDS patients. Studies conducted in the Philippines last year showed
that coconut oil does indeed reduce the viral load in AIDS patients.
Once
mistakenly thought to be bad because of its saturated fat content, coconut oil
is now known to contain a unique form of saturated fat that actually helps
prevent heart disease, stroke, and hardening of the arteries. The saturated fat
in coconut oil is unlike the fat found in meat or other vegetable fats.It is
identical to a special group of fats found in human breast milk that have been
shown to improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and protect against
bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.These fats, derived from coconut oil,
are now routinely used in hospital IV formulations and commercial baby
formulas.They're also used in sports drinks to boost energy and enhance
athletic performance.
Virgin
Coconut Oil is a product that can rightly be called a “neutriceutical” because
of its ability to help a number of health problems - substantiated by the
abundant positive research that has been carried out on it.Jon J. Kabara, Ph.D
(Professor Emeritus, Michigan State University) had this to say about the value
of lauric oils (contained in virgin coconut oil)."Never before in the history
of man is it so important to emphasize the value of Lauric Oils.The
medium-chain fats in coconut oil are similar to fats in mother's milk and have
similar nutriceutical effects.”
Coconut
oil has been used throughout Asia and the Pacific for thousands of years as
both a food and a medicine.Even today it holds a highly respected position in
the Ayurvedic medicine of India.Only recently has modern medical research
confirmed the many health benefits traditionally attributed to this remarkable
oil.
Another
incredible fact about coconut oil is that even though it is a fat, it actually
promotes weight loss!! The reason is again because of the healthy medium chain
fatty acids. These fatty acids do not circulate in the bloodstream like other
fats, but are sent directly to the liver where they are immediately converted
into energy, just like carbohydrates. So the body uses the fat in coconut oil
to produce energy, rather than be stored as body fat.
Medium
chain fatty acids found in coconut oil also speed up the body’s metabolism,
burning more calories and promoting weight loss. The weight-loss effects of
coconut oil have been clearly demonstrated by many researchers.They offer
wonderful health benefits and are nowhere found more abundantly in nature
outside coconut oil. For the hypothyroid sufferer the medium chain fats rev up
the body's sluggish metabolism and promote weight loss as well.
So
how much coconut oil should one consume? A good therapeutic dosage is 3 to 4
tablespoons a day. This provides enough lauric acid to build the immune system.
Also, look for unrefined coconut oil. Stay away from all hydrogenated oils,
whether it is coconut oil or vegetable oils. Hydrogenated oils are oils with
trans fatty acids, which have been altered from their original chemical
composition, and have been shown to raise serum cholesterol levels that can
lead to heart disease. Also look for unrefined coconut oils, like Virgin
Coconut Oil. Most commercial coconut oils are RBD (refined, bleached, and
deodorized). While these RBD oils do in many cases maintain the beneficial
chemical structures of the medium chain fatty acids, they also contain
chemicals used in processing.
Coconut
oil has been called "the healthiest dietary oil on earth".If you're
not using coconut oil for your daily cooking and body care needs you're missing
out on one of nature's most amazing health products.
Metaphorthanks Irene Colville
At
an airport I overheard a father and daughter in their last moments together.
They had announced her plane's departure and standing near the door she said,
"Daddy, our life together ha been more than enough. Your love is all I
ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Daddy."
They
kissed good-bye and she left. He walked over toward the window where I was
seated. Standing there I could see he wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to
intrude on his privacy, but he welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say
good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?"
"Yes,
I have," I replied. Saying that brought back memories I had of expressing
my love and appreciation for all my Dad had done for me. Recognizing that his
days were limited, I took the time to tell him face to face how much he meant
to me. So I knew what this man was experiencing.
"Forgive
me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?" I asked."I am old
and she lives much too far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is,
her next trip back will be for my funeral," he said.
"When
you were saying good-bye I heard you say, 'I wish you enough'.May I ask what
that means?"
He
began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other
generations. My parents used to say it to everyone."
He
paused a moment and looking up as if trying to remember it in detail, he smiled
even more.
"When
we said 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life
filled with enough good things to sustain them".
He
continued and then, turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were
reciting it from memory:
I
wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright.
I
wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more.
I
wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I
wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.
I
wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I
wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I
wish enough 'Hellos' to get you through the final 'Good-bye'.
He
then began to sob and walked away.
They
say, "It takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate
them, a day to love them, but then an entire lifetime to forget them."
"The
greatest weakness of most humans is their hesitancy to tell others how much
they love them while they’re still alive."
8. JOYFUL
LIVING Topic: Joyful Musings
Ah!
The "if onlys" of our lives! If only we had more time for the
kids...if only we got more sleep...if only we had the energy to exercise... And
then, the list of" I wishes"...at some point in life, we've all
dreamt of that cottage-in-the-woods or the villa-by-the-beach. The urge to chuck
it all, move out, and move away to a fantasy land...a dream made more precious
because it shall perhaps never come true.
Sometimes,
when you sit down to think about it, joy is a funny thing. It's the touch of a
hand, the sight of a face, the scent of a flower...it's in simple everyday
things, and yet, it seems so far beyond our reach. Why?
Perhaps
it's because we've outgrown the simplicity of childhood-with its characteristic
of having us be able to laugh at small jokes, find pleasure in blowing on a dandelion
flower, or chase lightning bugs at dusk.
And
also perhaps because we've learnt to chase less joyous goals like money,
career, and superficial beauty. Ayurvedic describes this as being
"object-referral" instead of "self-referral."
7
Places You Can Find Joy
1.
In Your Bedroom: Find ways to make your bedroom a haven of rest. Light an aroma
candle, listen to soft music, or simply lie there and breathe deep. Don't chase
sleep-let it flutter softly down and kiss your eyelids shut. If you have been
fighting a losing battle with sleep over the past months or years, though, it
is time to look deeper. For Ayurvedic believes lack of good sleep can be the
starting point for joylessness-owing to the imbalances and disorders it
creates.
2.
In Your Bath: Give your body a rejuvenating massage-lave it with oil,
unhurriedly, lovingly. Feel your skin come alive under the healing touch of
your own hands, running gently across the length of your limbs. Enjoy the feel
of warm, herbal oil soaking into your skin tissues, cleansing the pores and
making you feel joyful from within. Let the oil soak into your body for some
time. Meanwhile, do something that relaxes you: clip your nails, read a book,
or listen to healing music.
3.
In Your Kitchen: Fill your kitchen with the colours, aromas, and flavours of
herbs and spices.Bring home the freshest organic vegetables and fruits. Cook
your meals using healthy methods like stir-frying, steaming, or sautéing with
spices-they will retain the flavour and the healing qualities of food and make
it easy to digest.
4.
In Your Living Room: Decorate this room for comfort as well as luxury. Make it
a cocoon of warmth for yourself and your visitors. Just before guests come in,
float some pure essential oil in a diffuser and let the fragrance fill the air.
Keep fresh flowers in sight-few other things can make the heart smile as easily
as flowers can. Let your bookshelf brim with a healthy selection: we recommend
A Woman's Best Medicine by Nancy Lonsdorf, M.D.,Veronica Butler, M.D., and Melanie
Brown, Ph.D; Freedom >From Disease by Hari Sharma, M.D.; and Heaven's
Banquet by Miriam Hospodar.
5.
In Your Garden: Get close to the earth. There's something about holding a
handful of earth in your hands that connects you intimately to the very universe
around you. Don't fret over creating the perfect emerald lawn. Plant
butterfly-attracting colourful flowers or a potpourri of herbs. If you're short
of space, plant a container garden, which is portable and easy to maintain.
6.
In The Company of Friends: Few joys rival that of sharing a cup of tea and
cheerful conversation with a friend. Add a teaspoon of health to this joy by
opting for herbal tea; they are not only flavourful, but also immensely
beneficial in balancing mind and body.
7.
In Your Heart: Every heart that beats will find an echo in the words of Mirza
Ghalib, perhaps the greatest Urdu poet to have walked the earth: "My heart
is filled with desires-each one to die for! I have fulfilled thousands of them,
and yet, I've fulfilled too few..." Fulfil one of your heart's desires
today-no matter how small. It will make you happy to be alive, happy to be
here, happy to be.
7.Jokes
What is Age? Thank you
Margaret Tomko
Do you realize that the
only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we're kids?
If you're less
than 10 years old, you're so excited about aging that you think in fractions.
"How old
are you?" "I'm four and a half!"
You're never
thirty-six and a half. You're four and a half, going on five!
That's the
key. You get into your teens, now they can't hold you back. You jump to the
next number, or even a few ahead.
"How old
are you?" "I'm gonna be 16!" You could be 13, but hey, you're
gonna be 16!
And then the
greatest day of your life . . . you become 21. Even the words sound like a
ceremony . . . YOU BECOME 21. . . YESSSS!!!
But then you
turn 30. Oooohh, what happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED,
we had to throw him out. There's no fun now, you're just a sour-dumpling. What's
wrong? What's changed?
You BECOME 21,
you TURN 30, then you're PUSHING 40.
Whoa! Put on
the brakes, it's all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 . . . and
your dreams are gone.
But wait!!!
You MAKE it to 60. You didn't think you would!
So you BECOME
21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50 and MAKE it to 60.
You've built
up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that it's a day-by-day thing; you HIT
Wednesday!
You get into
your 80s and every day is a complete cycle; you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you
REACH bedtime.
And it doesn't
end there. Into the 90s, you start going backwards; "I was JUST 92."
Then a strange
thing happens. If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again.
"I'm 100 and a half!"
May you all make it to a healthy 100 and a half!!
HOW TO STAY YOUNG
Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height.
Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him/her.
Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening,
whatever. Never let the brain idle. " An idle mind is the devil's
workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's.
Enjoy the simple things.
Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is
with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable,
improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, to the next county, to
a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.
Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
AND ALWAYS REMEMBER:
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the
moments that take our breath away.
8.
Motivational
Is
it difficult to affirm your positive spirit? Not at all, if you remember a few
simple steps. First, open yourself to all your thoughts, emotions and
experiences.
Second,
affirm to yourself the validity of your existence.
Third,
take a new look at the world – try to see it without prejudices. You’ll soon
see that the world is not just black or white, but filled with a rainbow of
colours, ideas, opinions, lifestyles and beliefs.
Here
is a good way to get going: Write down all the words that embody the fears,
doubts, and shortcomings you see in your life.
Now,
try to redefine these words in a positive light. It’s not difficult at all:
Death:
This
may be our greatest dread. But consider that our inevitable end is what truly
gives importance and meaning to our lives. Our lives are framed by birth and
death, just as all our wonderful and true creations are framed – paintings,
music, novels, gardens, buildings, meals, lectures and prayers.
All
that we do has limits, including ourselves. Don’t view it with dread; see it as
your opportunity to make something wonderful and true of your life.
Waiting:
No
matter how impatient it makes us, we cannot avoid waiting. But almost every
worthwhile thing in life involves waiting, the kind of waiting we call anticipation.
Anticipation
increases our delight and pleasure. And the delays or hurdles we overcome as we
pursue our goals make our ultimate achievements more satisfying. Learn from the
sages to be patient, so that you appreciate all the more what life spontaneously
offers you.
Void:
We
all know someone who cannot abide a single empty moment. They busy themselves
constantly with trivial work, glue themselves to their televisions, and will
prattle on about nothing in particular, just to avoid the silences that always
arise when people get together.
Consider,
instead, the void as a vessel, which contains all that is and ever will be.
Think of the vessel that contains your life, and redefine the void as your own
personal vessel of opportunity. Don’t be afraid of idle moments, or of silence.
Forgetfulness:
There
is no need to remember everything. People with photographic memories often
refer to their condition as a curse, not a gift. Remembering everything is like
eating without being able to eliminate our wastes. Just so, forgetting is
necessary for a balanced and healthy life.
Ignorance:
Don’t
confuse ignorance with stupidity. Ignorance simply means lack of knowledge or
awareness. Lacking knowledge of something means you can learn about it without
preconceptions. Remember that an ignorant person knows he knows nothing; a
stupid person knows nothing but thinks he knows.
Defects:
You
needn’t turn your defects into hang-ups. Through contrast, does not a small
beauty spot make perfect skin more beautiful? Are those lips too thick, or all
the more inviting of a kiss? Am I not drawn to embrace those small breasts?
Perfect
beauty grows boring; but only add some small defect and beauty transforms into
something even more alluring, more complex... more desirable.
Looking
back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have.
As
children we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the
back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
Our
baby cribs were painted with bright colored lead based paint. We often chewed
on the crib, ingesting the paint.
We
had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we
rode our bikes we had no helmets.
We
drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We
would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the
hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a
few times we learned to solve the problem.
We
would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when
the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day.
We
played ball and sometimes the ball would really hurt.
We
ate cakes, bread and butter, and drank soft drink, but we were never over
weight; we were always outside playing.
School
sports had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to
learn to deal with disappointment.
Some
students weren't as smart as others or didn't work hard so they failed a grade
and were held back to repeat the same grade. That generation produced some of
the greatest risk-takers and problem solvers.
We
had the freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to
deal with it all.
